I hope you all have had a relaxing May so far! Our #MomsOnTheTrail content for Mother's Day focuses on mothers and their experiences, so to include the perspective from the other side, I asked one of our WPLN Fellows to write this month's note! — Larissa
This month, I want to highlight the everyday hero that guides me through life: my mom.
My mom has inspired me in more ways than I can count and continues to be my biggest cheerleader even as I’ve entered into adulthood.
Whether it was through her career as a social worker and adoption specialist or through her continual care and sacrifices as a stay-at-home mom, my mother truly exemplifies selflessness and service-oriented leadership.
She has always modeled true and loyal friendship through her relationships with others, and has taught me to treat people with kindness, integrity, and respect. My mom is the strongest, wisest, coolest lady I know, and I would not be where I am today, or half the woman I am today, without her.
This month, remember that mothers don’t just deserve to be celebrated on a single day in May, but rather every day, so take this month to remind your mom how much she means to you.

Onward,
Larissa

For Mother's Day this year, WPLN brought back our #MomsOnTheTrail series, to hear from mothers who are currently seeking or serving in public office. We chatted with the following women leaders to learn more about their experiences, the challenges they faced, and advice they'd offer for other women:
Pennsylvania State Representative Natalie Mihalek
Georgia State Representative Lauren Daniel
Former Colorado State Representative Libby Szabo
Former Colorado State Representative Clarice Navarro
Meet Katelyn (Condrey) Kidd, WPLN's Program Associate. Katelyn wears many hats at WPLN, but her primary role is coordinating logistics for both our in-person and virtual programming — including our 2024 National Summit! Katelyn is newly married to her high school sweetheart and is based in Richmond, VA. In her free time, Katelyn enjoys reading, recreational volleyball, and going to the gym.
... WPLN Founder and President Larissa Martinez was among the women leaders included in "How to Succeed in Office," a new feature from Cosmopolitan magazine in partnership with Pivotal Ventures that unpacks the challenges elected women face and the solutions that can benefit us all!
When it comes to the barriers and challenges, Larissa noted, "There aren't a ton of resources to help manage these considerations." That's why she founded WPLN, to build a critical support system for women who want to make a difference in their communities.
And since we know you're busy, here are our top picks for other "must reads" this month!
For the woman who wants to encourage resilience and strength in the next generation of women leaders, a new study by the Woman's Sport Foundation finds that "sport can play a powerful role in improving mental health."
For the woman worried about the cost of childcare, Reason examines whether a new law in D.C. requiring daycare workers have a college degree has raised the cost of daycare in the city.
For the woman who wants to Remember the Ladies, check out our monthly feature on key moments in women's representation and rights during the month of May in the past.

Women’s Public Leadership Network (WPLN) educates, organizes, and inspires women to run for elected office, obtain political appointments, and become more involved in the political process across the United States.
Women who believe in commonsense, pragmatic public policy solutions are often missing in political and policy dialogue.
